BLESSING FROM AN ELDER (Pete Seeger)

BLESSING FROM AN ELDER (Pete Seeger)

There once walked a gentle, funny, and very stubborn man, a musician who believed passionately in the power of people singing together out loud. It was his skill to induce crowds of friends and strangers to join their voices together and create transcendent harmonies that lifted up the people’s hearts and spirits and set the world to shining for a while, cloaked in visions of belonging, of unity, and of peace. With his long-necked five-stringed banjos, his 12-stringed guitars, and…

BUILD YOUR FRAMEWORK WELL

BUILD YOUR FRAMEWORK WELL

It is a truly amazing thing to witness what people who own their passions can build on a legacy dream that has a solid foundation grounded in taking joy in the fervor, fire and zeal that comes with a devoted pursuit of an appreciation for the power of the creative human spirit. On the island of Maui, Hawaii USA, there is a community-supported radio station that describes itself as a “non-commercial secular FM broadcast station.”  Its official call letters are…

CHOOSE YOUR OWN GOOD FIGHT

CHOOSE YOUR OWN GOOD FIGHT

Does it seem to you, as it does to me, that every human in the world has at least one thing in common:  We, all of us, struggle.  No matter who we are, struggle seems to be a fact of life. Some of us have great obstacles to overcome and some of us have more massive ambitions than others do, but, every one of us does have some sort of difficulty making it from where we are now to where…

WHEN MAGIC HAPPENS

WHEN MAGIC HAPPENS

It was at a festival celebrating taro and community in Hana that I saw another one of them — an intense, prepubescent boy who carried an ukulele around wherever he went. I noticed him sitting on the grass very close to the front of the low-built stage under a big canvas tent.  He sat there, soaking in the presence of a musician who was making a name for himself in the big city of Honolulu and beyond and doing his…

COMPLINE — Wings of a Prayer

Since 1956 the Compline Choir has filled St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle, WA with the uplifting holy sounds of chant.  The service happens at 9:30 p.m. every Sunday.  It is only 30 minutes long. There are no sermons, no priests – just readings of psalms and some thoughtful musings interspersed between an incredible, soothing, peace-inducing sound.

SONG OF PROTEST (Famous Are the Flowers)

SONG OF PROTEST (Famous Are the Flowers)

Every Hawaiian song is a poem, built with words that come from a feeling heart.   The songs are called “mele” and one who writes them is called a “haku mele,” one who braids words and music together that allows one heart to touch another. Just as there are songs that celebrate beauty, love, and all of the other feel-good parts of life and songs that honor respected leaders and foster pride in a people, there are also songs that express…

A CROWDED FIELD

Very often the stories you tell yourself keep you stuck in suck. TOO MANY PEOPLE GOT THERE FIRST Here’s one that’s likely to stop you in your tracks:  “There are too many people doing __________ (fill in the blank) already.” You tell yourself this and then make up a story about how you’ll get lost in the vast crowds of people doing the same __________ (fill in the blank) that you want to do. Maybe you tell yourself, “Nothing I…

HEART, PASSION AND THE WORLD

HEART, PASSION AND THE WORLD

“Follow your passion”…”take the path with a heart.”  We hear that a lot, those of us who are looking for meaning and mana to add to our ordinary lives. Are they the same thing?  Do they mean what we’ve been told they mean?  Does this advice make sense?
